Jasmine Star, Part Two

Three years ago it was discovered that Jasmine Star was plagiarizing quotes on Instagram and Facebook and shortly thereafter it was discovered that some of her blog posts were also plagiarized.  Unfortunately, I’ve received multiple submissions that she is doing it again.

Jasmine Star’s Blog “Inspiration is for Amateurs” (which is also shared on Instagram and Facebook) is awfully similar to a quote from Chuck Close.  Some of it is verbatim, some of it is heavily inspired by the source quote much like her blog posts were the last time.  Below I’ve highlighted the words that were identical.

Update: there’s also at least one more quip that wasn’t Jasmine’s original words and you’ll find that added below.

When I was on her blog for the above piece I had clicked over to the previous blog post she had made.  The beginning of the blog had a line that rang a bell for me and a quick google search confirmed my suspicions.  Like the first time this all came to light, Jasmine is again, co-opting cute stories as something that happened to her.

From her “Should I Change to Instagram Business Account?” blog, “I’m walking around the airport like everything is fine, but deep down inside my boot, my sock is sliding off.”

It’s a popular meme, original source unknown.

I guess when you become a rockstar you don’t have to abide by the law.

    “bad-assery”

  • You can’t fix stupid

Again? Seriously she didn’t learn the first time round.

      First, second, third…

      • You can’t fix stupid

fourth, fifth shall we continue 🙂

        • Celine (peaceetc)

Only if she does. And as long as people make excuses for her and continue to follower her even when she does stupid crap like this, then I guess we will.

  • Jeannemarie

    Oh No You Didn’t!!!!!

  • Celine (peaceetc)

Why is it hard for someone people to just quote someone and provide attribution? If you’re truly inspired, then you can share that inspiration in its proper context.

  • Diane L.

She also just ran an Instagram “Plan” that was eerily similar (let’s be honest, it was a COMPLETE RIP OFF) of the Instagram LAB that Jenna Kutcher put on a few weeks prior to J.Star kicking off hers.

She’s grasping at straws….it’s scary and sad.

  • Its like Ivanna Trump all over again

    • Photo Stealers

I think you mean Melania 🙂

      • carlos

I think he means the speech writer.

        • Justin Case

(I think he means Michelle Obama.)

          • Celine (peaceetc)

I think I love this thread.

  • raysot

    Just… wow…

She would have been infinitely better off explaining her own thoughts on inspiration, and then saying something like “This reminds me of a quote by someone I truly admire: (Cue quote)

While I personally think this doesn’t rise to the level of 1:1 plagiarism, I think the spirit of her post is evident, and that it’s not hers to begin with.

    • Celine (peaceetc)

If this were done in a paper at a university, it would count and the student would likely be in a lot of trouble with their professor.

  • Peter

Here is the correct way to disclose a quote (and happens to be the same quote): http://dedpxl.com/get-the-fck-to-work/

    • Photo Stealers

For the record, Zack’s blog (which is amazing, so is he) was posted the day after Jasmine’s blog. But it’s the perfect way to take the same quote and expand on the ideals while still giving the original author credit.

      • Are we sure that she actually posted it on the 19th, and didn’t just back date it? Knowing what we know about J*, it seems more likely to me that, as a former student of Zack’s, she saw the dedpixl post on Saturday (the 20th) wrote her own thoughts, then changed the posting date to Friday so as not to appear to have blatantly copied him.

        • Photo Stealers

The date on her Facebook and Instagram is also the 19th.

      • Zack originally quoted it in April as his recent blog post link shows.

        • Photo Stealers

I missed the link back to it. Thank you!

      • Zack Arias

It’s interesting that we were working on a blog using the same quote at the same time.

  • You can’t fix stupid

She is deleting quite quickly now. First it looked like this and it looks like this

    • You can’t fix stupid

I wonder how long this will stay up

she turned off commenting on her page

    She left before ethics class.

and her daddy’s a preacher… so I suppose she left church before his sermon ended too.

    • Not my first rodeo

She literally went to law school for one semester at UCLA and used to use that to her advantage.

  • Tyrone P. Easley

Maybe I’m not as well versed in these sort of things, but it seems this website went through a lot of trouble watching, waiting and reading Jasmine Star’s blog in order to connect her post to someone else blog post. Then everyone jumps and piles on. I’m not going to defend her, but I will say this seems extreme. Is it because of what she may have done or is it her popularity that makes this a big deal?

    • Justin Case

You wanna be a rockstar, you gotta accept the critics.

    • Photo Stealers

As I said in the post, this was submitted to me. The quote is a popular one by a well loved artist, people picked up on it immediately.

      • Celine (peaceetc)

It’s unfortunate how some people are overlooking that. I hope Tyrone will see your comment and realize you aren’t out to get anyone and don’t sit and wait for someone like J* to screw up.

    • Jeannemarie

It’s a famous quote by a famous painter/artists! All she had to do was say… “I came across this super quote today by one of my favorite artists CC and then follow wth her thought. it’s a huge deal to those who don’t know the quote and telling her that God s speaking to them through her words…which she didn’t come up with! They were said by someone else!

    • carlos

It’s because she should know better.

“This website” can’t read. The person who runs it can, but is busy and doesn’t have time to lurk other people’s blogs. However, there are a lot of people out there who do follow J* and others (not everything she does is stolen or wrong) and when you have a lot of eyes on your stuff and you do something like this, someone will see it.

I could “write” an article that was wholly copied and not get called out because nobody would see it…. So, yes, in part it’s because she’s popular, but the main reason is because she did something wrong. Not only that, she was caught, apologized (sorta) but is doing it again.

Contrast this with a lot of popular photographers who have never been “featured” here because they don’t just quote this stuff, but actually “show up” and “do the work”….. Their own work.

    • You can’t fix stupid

This is what she sells, this is how she makes her money. It is the same as if she advertises home make cakes and then gives you a store brought one.

    • Dana

Actually, I happen to know that someone else noticed the plagiarism and reported it to this website. The thing is, Jasmine has been caught plagiarizing before and it nearly destroyed her reputation. Fortunately for her, she was able to come back from it. However, she’s really reaching to use a quote that is so well-known and try to pass it off as her own. I would have hoped that she learned something from being caught the first time around. I used to teach high school students and we spent quite awhile discussing plagiarism because many of them would try to submit essays that were lifted straight off the internet. They were lazy and didn’t want to do the work. Same thing here.

  • Hulk Jordan

I copy and paste funny comments and memes all the time…Is that plagiarizing or does it only count when its a quote by a famous painter/artist?

    • Celine (peaceetc)

Short answer: yes. TL;DR answer: the photos that often accompany memes are copyright by the person who took the photo(s), so that’s copyright infringement. As for words, if it’s significant enough, like in this case, then yes. But if it’s done simply for personal use, then people are a lot less likely to care. In this instance, though, it was done commercially, as Jasmine’s blog is an extension of her commercial brand.

I know someone who took a now very popular viral image (Disaster Girl), and he certainly didn’t give anyone permission to use it in the tons of memes out there using it, so in effect, a whole crapton of people have engaged in copyright infringement. But it’s a lost cause and well beyond his control, especially in the nine years after it went viral, so he just rolls with it and finds it funny, instead. That is not what happened here, but you mentioned memes, so I thought I’d throw that out there.

    • Justin Case

Dunno… do you make your living off of posting said memes and blog as if you were the oh-so-clever-one who made them up?
If so, then yeah, it’s plagiarism.
If not, next time you do it, try to at least give credit to the oh-so-clever person who DID come up with/make the meme/comment.

      • Hulk Jordan

Celebrities post memes/quotes all the time without giving credit, whether it be on twitter or instagram. They get paid to tweet or post on instagram.

I just skimmed thru Jasmines instagram and she posts several inspiration quotes but in pictures. To me this article is a bit “Reaching”. I follow a few fashion bloggers and all they do is post inspirational quotes whether it be in words or in pictures with no credit.

        • Justin Case

and WHY is she a celebrity? Because she WRITES about being creative… and this very quote was about doing WORK as an artist: kinda ironic, huh?
Also, your logic is faulty: celebrities get called out for stealing quotes ALL THE TIME.
Live by social media, get taken down by social media.

          • Hulk Jordan

Celebrities dont get called out. Name them? Just go on one of those Kardashians instagram. They post quotes without credit. Fashion bloggers who get PAID for blogging use quotes all the time.

These are from Khloe Kardashian instagram. Clearly no credit

            instagram.com/p/BHGEZkMjh7t/
            instagram.com/p/BIouwQljpdN/

    • I do that all the time BUT i actually simply put qoutes around it.

  • Kc

People really have too much time in their hands. I can understand if its a photo shes stealing because shes a photographer. But its a damn quote which everyone posts on the internet. I know I’ve seen a few quotes I like and posted it on my social media not knowing who said it

    • You can’t fix stupid

She makes money off her writing and this is how she earns her living. There is a huge difference. This isn’t the first time she has been caught either. This is what she sells. So basically she steals what she sells.

      • Kc

Who gives a shit. Are you losing sleep over it? if not STFU and sit down

    • Michael Blitch

None of it is attributed as quotes but is passed off as original material, and that is plagiarism.

    • Laura

A quick web search in under one nano second will easily fix that and help you identify the true author of quotes. You can also search key paragraphs. There is free software out there to use for this specific purpose, too. There’s no excuse for anyone to do this. It’s illegal, misleading and unethical to post someone else’s work and present it as your own original content. This IS a big deal, especially given her (JS) status in the industry AND how many times she’s done this and has been busted for it in the past. All of the people who are okay with this behavior and who are willing to blow it off are part of the reason so many people think it’s okay to steal photos. Words, images, music, content – it’s all protected by copyright law. If YOU didn’t write it, if it wasn’t born out of your own hard work, sweat, labor, creativity, etc., then you should be properly citing and attributing. Period. This is completely unacceptable on a multitude of levels. ::and scene::

      • Kc

OMG its illegal somebody call the police because she used a persons quote and posted it on the internet. STFU.

  • Celine (peaceetc)

For those coming here and saying what’s the big deal, this is why people should care:

She puts herself out there as a professional, and her blog is an extension of her commercial brand. She is selling her ability to “guide” people.

She has stolen content repeatedly — a ton of quotes were used without attribution (making it seem as if she came up with them, and accepted compliments without saying she didn’t), and several blog posts, either whole or in part (including graphics, as I recall, but someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). Big chunks of others’ work. And when she was caught out, she didn’t write to people and apologize, she wrote to them just expecting them to be okay with what she did. I saw one of the emails at the time.

She also posted a video with music she wasn’t authorized to use. She ended up blaming someone else for it being posted, but the music wasn’t even available to license, as I recall. Again, someone correct me if I’m wrong.

So Jasmine has a pattern of stealing others’ content. This is why what she did this time is important, because it seems to show she hasn’t learned her lesson.

This is different than some random person doing this. Jasmine is doing this commercially, as in for profit. She’s making money off her brand, and part of that brand is her blog.

Copyright infringement i important. It’s also ILLEGAL, and as such, she can be sued for a crapton of money. She knows this, yet she keeps doing it. And people keep making excuses for it, and it’s also damn expensive to sue. She knows this, too, and is counting on her followers not caring, in my opinion. And apparently they don’t. It’s sad.

  • You can’t fix stupid

She seems to be spending more time deleting than anything else.

    • Celine (peaceetc)

I don’t like that people are posting on her social media, but her just deleting everything isn’t going to help. She needs to address this head-on, which is something she completely failed to do the last time she was outed on here, if I remember correctly. That time, all she did was post something to her private Facebook group and never acknowledge it publicly. She did acknowledge the video with the unauthorized song, but she deflected the blame onto someone else.

      • JH

Dont you think that her followers should be aware that she is a coward and a fraud? I certainly do. That is why I posted for the very first (and last) time. By not commenting, you are doing her a favour by keeping this hidden.

      • JH

furthermore, if people keep posting her plagiarizing on her page, then other people will start to ask questions. I am not trying to start a fight here, you guys do excellent work. But this lady has gone too far.

        • Celine (peaceetc)

I understand what you mean, but the person who runs this site prefers people stay off of the social media of those outed on here. This page will likely show up when people Google her name, so it’s not like people won’t be able to find out about what she did.

          • JH

my apologies. But it makes me very angry to see people making money by cheating. I have had my work taken from me numerous times (some even won contests without my knowledge).

I wont post again on social media.

Have you guys ever considered branching out to find stealers of landscapes, architecture, and wildlife? I noticed the majority are weddings.

          • You can’t fix stupid

Well if Jasmine Star keeps on deleting everything this will the the top search via Google.

          • Celine (peaceetc)

I’m sorry you had work stolen. It makes me angry, too. Some people really suck.

As for the types of photographers, I think most of the listings come from submissions from people who notice the stolen images or from those who’ve had their work stolen. It’s probably a lot easier for the average person to notice when photos of people are stolen than landscapes, etc., especially when they or someone they know are in the images.

I personally shoot mainly outdoor shots, so that’s where my interest lies. Before I started paying attention to this site, I didn’t know who post of the names in portrait and wedding photography were. I still don’t know a lot of them. Like Jasmine Star — I paid zero attention to her because I just didn’t care about the services she’s offering, And once I learned how she takes “shortcuts” with her work, I’m even less inclined to care. She’s not even on my radar, except when she’s outed for doing something underhanded.

          • Photo Stealers

I think the reason it’s mostly wedding/portrait photographers here is because a) I’m more well known in that circuit and b) people tend to steal images to get hired for something and weddings/portraits are quick money. The landscape photographers I have featured here typically have their images for sale online or in a store – stores are harder to catch!

    • JH

Oh good! you saved my posts. I didnt screen cap in time

She is also unfriending/banning/blocking anyone that comments on her SM as well.

I updated the post with another quip from a different blog post. Since I’m already being called petty I decided to go ahead and post it.

  • Michael Goolsby

I appreciate how she begins her blog post with the declaration: “Inspiration is for amateurs”, and then, when addressing the plagiarism issues, declares: ” I am—and remain—totally inspired by who [Chuck Close] is…. My apologies for not attributing inspirational credit to him”.

There is a somewhat funny vicious circle going on here. Another blogger has essentially stolen this thread from you without citing you. http://www.diyphotography.net/plagiarism-is-for-amateurs/

    • Photo Stealers

That’s Missy MWAC and it’s not stolen from here – she reblogged her own blog on DIY. http://missymwac.com/plagiarism-is-for-amateurs/

My point was that I doubt she got the information on her own without learning of it from you. No skin off my back either way if you don’t see it that way.

I think Jasmine may sue you! I have seen several articles just like this. Those similarities are very similar to a lot of other authors. Many public speakers use those examples about lighting striking.
I can think of several speakers on you-tube that have said things extremely similar to them. Do you know who ZigZiglar is? He talks exactly like this. He is dead now but his quotes have been published for many years. I think you have been around Missy MWAC too long. Even things she claims to have authored have been said by others before her. Plagiarism is a bad thing but the photography community is not the only place these thoughts and ideas have appeared.

Most of these photographers are getting their material from famous salesmen and public speakers. Going after photo thieves is one thing. Accusing someone of plagiarism is another. Plagiarism is very hard to prove! You have to have proof that the author is the original creator. I know Jasmine was caught before but that does not make her guilty of plagiarism every time. If she did copy from Chuck Close, I will bet you anything that those saying have been used in the business sector long before he ever wrote them. Word for word plagiarism is one thing but this is something else entirely.

Unless I missed something, you are way off base with this post.
I do not care for Jasmine. I am a fan of photography blogs and this website. Also, I am not a photographer. I work in corporate sales and I have heard seen very similar thoughts and ideas expressed from business and sales speakers. I just find it strange that you think any of those thoughts are original by either author!

  • Thanks for the laugh. “Do the work” – and she plagiarizes the information aka not doing the work.
